February 2nd-February 6th

10th Grade- Poetry Projects were due on Tuesday and we had a unit 13 vocabulary quiz today (Wednesday). We are starting to work grammar and will be discussing subject-verb agreement the rest of the week. We are asking for $6.50 from each student so that we can purchase John Steinbeck's The Pearl. We hope to start this the week after next. Until then, we will be working with some common grammar errors in preparation for the research paper we will write on The Pearl after we read.

11th Grade- We are starting Modernism this week and took our unit 13 vocabulary quiz today (Wednesday). We will be reading "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and responding to some analytical questions about the poem in groups. Students who will be absent need to be checking Edmodo regularly. I will post a copy of these questions to the Edmodo group.

12th Grade- We are studying sonnets this week. We discussed some Elizabethan Theatre history on Monday and discussed different forms and styles of sonnets Tuesday and today. Tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday we will analyze sonnets and students will be required to write their own sonnet in iambic pentameter. This sonnet will be due Monday. Third period took their unit 13 vocabulary quiz today and 2nd period will take it tomorrow.

Below you will find my make up work policy. I am explaining this policy to your students tomorrow and sending a hard copy of this home. It should have been attached to my course syllabus and I apologize that it was not. If you have any questions about this please contact me.

Make-Up Work Policy
**Please consider this an addition to the class rubric
Each student will have an opportunity to make up any work they missed so long as the absence is excused by the office. The student will have three days upon returning to make up missed assignments. The students need to stay in constant communication with the teacher. I do not want make-up work to be a source of tension for students, but if they do not communicate with me I will have to assume they have chosen to not make up the assignment.
All work that is able to be made-up will be marked in Achieve as a grade of 1/100. The purpose of this method is two-fold. It is designed to assist parents in recognizing what work needs to be made up and to help students see how choosing to NOT make up the work will affect their overall grade. Once the assignment is past-due, the grade will be changed to a 0.
Often I encourage students to make up tests and quizzes with me as I am at school most mornings by 7:00 a.m. and stay after school most afternoons. There will be times, however, that I will need to leave tests with Mrs. Garret to be taken Friday mornings. Again, communication with me is key.
If you have any questions about this policy, please do not hesitate to email me.

January 26th - January 30th

Parents and students,

We had a wonderful time at the Shakespeare Festival last Friday! Thank you so much to all the wonderful parents we had volunteer. It was a great show.

Here is our agenda for the week:

10th Grade
Poetry Project- We discussed your final poetry project today and that will be due Monday, February 2nd. Remember, you need to select a poet from the given list and complete five TPCASTT responses on their poetry (one response per poem). I will be providing examples in class throughout the week to help guide you and you will have time in class on Thursday and Friday to work, so bring whatever materials you need to take advantage of that time.

Vocab- We will play our Kahoot review on Tuesday and test on our vocab words Wednesday of this week.

11th Grade
Test- We are reviewing our study guides today and testing on Regionalism, Realism, and Naturalism on Tuesday (tomorrow). Your study guide will also be due before you take your test.

Vocab- Wednesday we will play Kahoot and review our vocab and Thursday you will have your quiz. Our next unit is on Modernism and we will begin discussing that on Thursday and Friday.

12th Grade
Test- We are wrapping up our unit on King Arthur and will be reviewing for our test tomorrow. Your study guide will be due before you begin your test.

Vocab- Wednesday we will play Kahoot and review our vocab and Thursday you will have your quiz. Our next unit is on Shakespeare and Macbeth (yay!!!) and we will begin discussing that on Thursday and Friday.

To all students and parents
Grades- I was out sick most of last week and so you will notice you do not have many grades in Achieve from me. I hope to get those put in by the end of the week so that you will know where you stand in this class.

Book Fair- The book fair is this week and I would love for you all to participate! After your test and/or quiz, if you would like to visit the book fair I will let you go in groups of two or three. There are so many books out there for you to enjoy and I'd like to encourage you to bring money to purchase a new book.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Have a wonderful week and Go Patriots!

A Week in Review: January 5th-9th

Hello to my new students and parents,

My name is Emily Carter and I am the new High School English teacher at Pike Lib. I am so excited to start this journey with each of you!

Parents- I sent home a parents letter with your student this past week with more information about me and my class. Please remind them to get that to you.

Here is what we've been up to:

10th- We are started a poetry unit this week. We will be reviewing poetic devices and discussing how those devices help us identify the theme and purpose of a poem.

11th- We discussed characteristics of the Dark Romantics and are wrapping up Romanticism with a mini-project. Each student will create a storyboard on StoryBoardThat.com about Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." They must find alliteration, symbolism, repetition, internal rhyme, and imagery in the poem and illustrate it in their storyboard. This will be due Tuesday (01/13).

12th- We have been discussing King Arthur and some of the history that inspires his legend. We took our first quiz Friday.

I also want parents to know that we are still on for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival Field Trips this spring. Mrs. Jordan and I are working together to get things ready and we are so looking forward to it. I will post more on this next week.

Again, I am so excited to have the opportunity to teach your students. They are already finding that special place in my heart. If you ever need to reach me, my school email is on the school website, but the best way to reach me outside of school is ecarterpikelib@gmail.com (this email is hooked up to my phone). Let's make this a great year and Go Patriots!
